What is your assignment?

Group Presentation, Annotated Bibliography and Final Paper

EGL 101

Your next project of the semester will be a group research project on topics about food generated by our class.

As a group, you must find at least ten good sources -- all different types of sources (websites, journals, newspapers, books etc.) on this topic and write up an annotated bibliography of the sources you are using.  Then, as a group, you will present your findings to your audience.  Each person will also write up an individual essay.  The assignment for the essay is attached.

Annotated Bibliography  (50 pts)

You will need to pick out the five best sources on your topic and write up an annotated bibliography of those sources.  An annotation is a brief summary and evaluation of the information offered by that source, including the main argument of the author and the usefulness of the source to your own research.  You can address such questions as: What useful information does the source provide? Is the source reputable and trustworthy? Is there something in teh source you disagree with?  You must follow the correct Modern Language Association (MLA) citation style.  We will go over this style in class.

You will need to turn in Xerox copies of all of the five sources you have used.

Presentation (100 pts)

You will then present your findings and research to the class. The presentations should be 20 minutesEach individual member must present some aspect of the research.  What questions do you still have that might require even further research?  What were the most interesting or shocking things you learned?  What views were confirmed?  What views did your research transform or refine?

The presentation will be graded on 1) clarity and complexity of information given; 2) organization of the information presented; 3) originality and creativity in presentation style.  You should have some audio-visual component to the presentation.  If you decide to make a Power Point presentation, please do so mainly for graphic purposes—to show pictures, graphs etc.  Do not reduce your whole presentation to bullet points and then read those bullet points out loud in class.

Essay (100 pts)

You will each write up an individual essay in which you report on your findings and discuss how this research has affected you personally.  This purpose of this report is to inform the reader of what you have learned and how you have been affected by what you have learned.  You should begin your essay with a paragraph or two situating your specific research in terms of the topic as a whole.  The introduction should draw the reader in and provide relevant background information.  Then, go on to summarize at least three important things you learned during your research.  You should include all relevant facts, data, statistics etc., but you should also summarize the larger conclusions and points that this information supports.  Finally, at the end, go into a few personal reflections on what you have learned.

The essay should incorporate at least three of the five sources from your annotated bibliography.  You may also include other sources than those in your annotated bibliography as well.  You will also need to bring in one of the authors we have read in class.

You will need to do in-text citations and a “Works Cited” page for this essay.  We will go over the correct citation format in class.

This essay must be 5-6 pages, and must include a “Works Cited” page at the end. You should have a title page with your name, the date and your class section (EGL 101-034).

Good luck!

NO EXTENSIONS THIS TIME.  We will have conferences during the two previous class periods.
