Company Research: Company Profiles

Strategies and resources for conducting research on a company's financials, operations, and industry environment

Why company profiles?

Company profile information ranges from brief descriptions of a business and its activities to more in-depth details about finances, key competitors, executives, and size.

Good places to look

Company websites – How does the company want to present itself? Examine a company's own website for history or profiles. Keep a lookout for sections with labels such as aboutcompany information, history, and so on.  Don't expect different websites to use identical terminology.

Annual reports – Public companies generally make their annual reports available on their websites. Like the 10-K filed annually with the SEC, the annual reports should include information about the company and the financial performance over the last year. Since annual reports are intended for shareholders and potential investors, they are designed to be more aesthetically pleasing with additional elements like pictures, graphics, company history, descriptions of major company activities, and a message from the CEO.

Books – Books about specific companies typically incorporate historical background information. Check the Oakton Library Catalog and I-Share for books

Articles – Articles about specific companies may include historical background to provide context.
