Economics and the Economy

What is an economic indicator?

An economic indicator is a statistic about the economy that can be used to analyze and predict changes in economic activity.  Economic indicators can be broken up into three categories: leading, coincident, and lagging.

Leading indicators are predictors of future performance.

Coincident indicators appear in conjunction with current economic activity.

Lagging indicators are statistics about economic activity after it has taken place.
