Evaluating Sources

The video below and the following article are the sources we will be evaluating in the quiz. View these before you begin! As you view the video and read the article, consider:

Who is the creator and/or publisher of this work?

  • Are they an expert? What are their credentials in the field?
  • Have they published other works on this topic?
  • Are they objective and reliable, or do they appear biased?
  • What other kinds of work do they produce/publish?
  • What kind of website is it? Commercial? Governmental? Academic? Nonprofit?

What can you discern about the source's information regarding accuracy, completeness, and order?

  • Do they offer any conclusions?
  • What perspectives are represented?
  • Is this information helpful in answering your research question?
  • Does it provide useful information on your topic?

Where can you substantiate the source's claims?

  • Do other reputable organizations support the source's conclusions with independent evidence?
  • Does the source link to or quote statistics from studies?

When was the source created?

  • Can you easily locate the date the information was published? 
  • If the original publication date is less recent, does the source appear to have been updated as knowledge changes?
  • Is the information timely?

Why was this source published?

  • Who is the audience for this source? Scholarly? Popular?
  • Does it provide objective information or is it trying to persuade you of something?
