Searching for books in the Library's Catalog

Search over 100,000 books in the Library's Catalog and books from 127 Illinois college and university libraries in the I-Share Catalog.

How can I use information from books without reading the whole book?

To find the information that you need, you usually don't have to read a book cover to cover.

Most books have an introductory chapter that lays out the book’s focus and a concluding chapter that does a summary of the book’s content.

In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, be sure to check the table of contents and the index.  The book's table of contents, and index make it easier for you to target the material most relevant to your research.

Not sure if a book has the information that you need?  Get help from the Oakton Library faculty at either the RHC/Skokie or Des Plaines Campus.  Stop by the reference desks or call 847-635-1474 or 847-635-1644.

How to obtain an Oakton Library/Student ID card

You need this!

The Oakton Library card (OWL card) also serves as an ID card for currently enrolled Oakton Community College students taking classes for credit.

To get an Oakton Library library card, bring a picture ID (driver's license or state ID) to the Oakton Library circulation desk on the Des Plaines Campus (Room 1406) or the Ray Hartstein Campus (Room A200, Skokie).
