How can I use information from books without reading the whole book?

To find the information that you need, you usually don't have to read a book cover to cover.

Most books have an introductory chapter that lays out the book’s focus and a concluding chapter that does a summary of the book’s content.

In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, be sure to check the table of contents and the index.  The book's table of contents, and index make it easier for you to target the material most relevant to your research.

Not sure if a book has the information that you need?  Get help from the Oakton Library faculty at either the RHC/Skokie or Des Plaines Campus.  Stop by the reference desks or call 847-635-1474 or 847-635-1644.
