Oakton Recycles!
Recycling bins are now in all classrooms and labs. Every ton of recovered paper saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.
In the fall of 2010, the College installed solar panels at the Des Plaines campus that provide approximately 35 percent
of the energy needed to heat water, reducing consumption by an annual 85,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
The solar hot water system consists of 20 solar collectors, four 200-gallon storage tanks, and two drain-back tanks located on Student Street.
The project received funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chicago Wilderness honored the College with a 2010 Conservation and Native Landscaping Award, which recognizes exceptional projects that incorporate native landscaping, ecosystem restoration, and protection and/or conservation design.
The College restored 50 acres of remnant woodlands and reconstructed seven acres of grassland, preserving precious habitat for 400 native plant species. from: President's Report to the Community 2011.
