Why Do We Cite?

We use citations to give credit to the authors of the sources we use in our writing. This is important because it shows that we have done our research and that we are not plagiarizing. Citations also allow readers to find the sources we used, so they can learn more about the topic. 

Citation Examples

Sample MLA citation for a journal article includes:

  • Author(s): Last name, First name

  • Title of Article: In quotation marks

  • Journal title: In italics

  • Volume and issue number: In bold, separated by a comma

  • Publication date: Month and year

  • Page numbers: Inclusive page numbers, separated by a hyphen

Sample oral citations in speeches include: 

  • Name of source and credentials: Author's name and expertise

  • Publication Information: Publication title

  • Publication Date: Month and year

Sample in text citation includes

  • Author(s): Author's last name

  • Publication Date: Month and year

  • Page number: The page number of the information you are citing
