EGL 101 - Steven Monk - Fall 2023

Why should I write an Annotated Bibliography?

An annotated bibliography can help you learn more about your research topic and help you identify sources about that topic that are a good fit for your paper or project.

Annotated Bibliographies have two important pieces: the citation and the annotation. This is true in every citation style - MLA, APA or Chicago/Turabian.

  • Begin each entry with a complete citation for a source in the correct citation style.
  • Then, depending on your assignment, write a short description of your source.  This description could be a
  • summary of the information,
  • a brief critique of the information,
  • a short analysis of whether the source is right for your assignment
  • or all three!

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) describes the how to and why an annotated bibliography is useful and important in your research process.
