Chicago is divided into fifty wards, each represented by an Alderperson elected for a four-year term. Together, these 50 Alderpersons form the Chicago City Council, which serves as the city's legislative branch. The City Council typically meets monthly to exercise general and specific powers delegated by state statute. As the legislative body of the city, the City Council votes on a wide range of important matters. These include proposed loans, grants, bond issues, land acquisitions and sales, zoning changes, traffic control issues, mayoral appointees, and other financial appropriations. The Council also plays a crucial role in shaping city policies and priorities. Additionally, the City Council is responsible for approving the comprehensive plan of public improvements for the city.
