Levi wrote of the moral collapse that occurred in Auschwitz and the fallibility of human memory that allows such atrocities to recur. Levi's last book published before his death in 1987.

Filmmaker Melissa Hacker's mother, Ruth Morley (Academy Award nominated costume designer for The Miracle Worker), was one of the over 10,000 children who were saved in the Kindertransport movement during the Holocaust. On the eve of World War II, as millions of Jews were seeking refuge from Nazi persecution, country after country turned its back--all except for Great Britain who opened its doors to an unspecified number of Jewish children in danger. As the children boarded trains taking them to a safe haven in London, their parents were left to embark on a different journey--one taking them to the concentration camps. The documentary tells the story of a group of children from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia who were fortunate enough to escape the unfathomable horror of the genocide perpetrated against the Jewish people during WWII. They were saved by the Kindertransport, which took 10,000 children to the safety of England in the late 1930s. (The United States government, which could have sponsored a similar program, declined to do so.) Assuming that the broad historical context is well enough known, the film concentrates on individual stories, using archival film clips and photographs, re-enactments and interviews, with both the rescuers and the rescued.
