Evaluate Information Carefully

Image of student at computer looking shocked. Text reads Evaluate Information Carefully

The Department of Health and Human Services released a report "Treatment for Pediatric Gender Dysphoria: Review of Evidence and Best Practices."

It is important to evaluate this information for the qualities librarians always suggest and notice that:

  • The report has not undergone peer review which means experts in the field have not vetted the information. In fact, experts have refuted the claims published here. See link below from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • A peer review would investigate the claims made in this document, assuring readers they are sound. This has not happened.
  • There is not a named author of the report which means readers cannot investigate the author's expertise.
  • The report suffers from confirmation bias, "The tendency to seek and interpret information that confirms existing beliefs.." See link below for more information about confirmation bias.
