Circulation Information

This guide will explain how items circulate in the library and reserve procedures.

Collections

This is a list of the collections found on each campus.

Des Plaines Collections

Borrowing

All library general collection items with the exception of Paralegal and Reference are available for checkout. These items are located on the shelves in the public area of the library. Our Paralegal and Reference collections can only be used in the library. See Reserves for information on how this collection circulates. If an Oakton item can no longer be renewed, you can request to check it out again at the circulation desk.

Oakton Employees

Faculty, staff, and administrators with current Oakton library cards/O.W.L. cards may check out most Oakton general collection items for 112 days (16 weeks) and renew up to a total 336 days (12 months).

The following Oakton items can only be checked out for 28 days and cannot be renewed. 

  • DVDs (feature films and international)
  • Display items
  • Collections
    • Career
    • E-Child
    • ESL
    • Government Documents
  • Items deemed high demand (examples: older course textbooks and test prep books)

Oakton Students and District Residents

Oakton credit and non-credit students as well as district residents with current Oakton library cards/O.W.L. cards may check out most Oakton general collection items for 28 days (1 month) and renew up to a total 84 days (16 weeks).

The following Oakton items can only be checked out for 28 days and cannot be renewed.

  • Items deemed high demand (examples: older course textbooks and test prep books)
