Oakton LibGuide Book Asset Updates (VuFind to Primo)

Although this video was created to facilitate the VuFind to Primo transition, the segments demonstrating how to update book assets (grab permalinks, extend book titles) are still current. I will create a new video later in 2024.

What kind of resources do you need?

To carry out these activities, you need a LibApps user account with access to LibGuides. All Oakton Librarians have this kind of LibApps account.

Before you begin to add a new book asset, use the guidelines on this page to obtain book information.

Overview

Why use this procedure for adding book assets?

Springshare's LibGuides platform makes it easy for guide owners to incorporate cover art, bibliographic info, descriptions, call numbers, and catalog links for book assets. A book asset is a piece of content that can be reused across our guides.

Obtain book information

To add a book from the Oakton Library Catalog (Primo VE), first obtain the following:

  • Title (Although LibGuides can generate this from the ISBN, sometimes subtitles are truncated)
  • Call number and location (available under "Location Items" or "Locations")
  • URL for the book's generated permalink, for example:
    https://i-share-oak.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01CARLI_OAK/12sq4rm/alma991356849905873

Tip: Some guide authors find that first copying the catalog record information into an editor such as NotePad makes the process more efficient.

Create a new book asset & add it to a guide - written directions

  • While editing your guide, click on the Add / Reorder button Image of the Add/Reorder buttonat the bottom of the box where you want add the book.
  • Select Book from the Catalog from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter the ISBN for the book you want to add in the ISBN field and click the Get Book Info button. If available, data & cover art for this book will automatically be inserted into the book asset.
  • Enter or edit the book's Title, Author/Editor, Publication Date (year only), Call Number, & URL (permalink). Once the book asset is created, the book's title functions as a hyperlink.
  • The Use Proxy setting should be left at No.
  • To customize how the description appears on the page, choose your preference from the Description Display options. Since less is more, the Hide or Hover options are the best choices.
  • Use the Position option to choose where the new asset should be inserted in the box. (You can reorder it later, if necessary.)
  • In the Cover Art box, you can view, change, resize, or remove the book's cover art image. We use the small - 90px wide option for book asset cover art. Use the ALT Text field to customize the alternative text for the image.
  • We currently do not assign resource icons for book assets.
  • Click the Save button.
